about

When you record at home as much as we do, there are always going to be bits and pieces lying around. Here are some unreleased tracks, demos, outtakes, etc. that have never never been posted here. All tracks were recorded between 2014-19.

If you are new to Vista Blue, I'd suggest starting somewhere else, like maybe our first release (wearevistablue.bandcamp.com/album/good-eye), our debut 12-inch (wearevistablue.bandcamp.com/album/seasons), or our curling split with The Zambonis (wearevistablue.bandcamp.com/album/the-zambonis-vista-blue-olympic-curling-split).

Below are some notes about each track.

1. Colt Cabana #2

A couple of years ago we had a kickstarter campaign to release our curling-themed split 7-inch with the Zambonis. One of the reward levels was to choose your own theme for a Vista Blue EP, and we'd write/record songs and send you a one-of-a-kind CD. One of our backers had us write an EP about wrestler Colt Cabana, despite the fact that we know nothing about Colt Cabana or wrestling. This is one of the tracks from his CD. Recorded early 2019.

2. Summer Olympics (acoustic)

When Matthew at Something To Do Records wanted to add a free acoustic EP to the Seasons 12-inch, we did three songs, and he picked two. This was the one that wasn't used. Recorded in summer of 2017.

3. Red Red Wine on a Sunday (theme song)

While we were recording the Wonderband album in early 2017, Jerry from Red Red Wine on a Sunday asked if we might be able to come up with a theme song for his show. I was very worried about messing with a Replacements classic, so I tried to do something that was part original (and Wonderband-ish) while paying tribute to the song he named his show after.

4. Pretty When the Wind Blows (God Help the Girl cover)

Whenever I haven't recorded in a little while, I try to do a quick warmup track to get back into it. It's usually not anything I save, and I often delete the track anyway, but I'd sent this one over to my friend Rusty, so it survived. I did this in summer 2016 before recording the "Summer's Over" EP. This is one of my favorite tracks from "God Help the Girl."

5. Bad Days (Todd's demo)

When I started Vista Blue in 2014, I had a ton of demos of unused songs dating back to when the Loblaws stopped playing. Todd then sent me a bunch of his demos to consider as well. This one stuck with me right away, although it took until 2016 for me to actually get a chance to finish it and use it.

6. Slow Down (Cowboy Mouth cover)

Part of starting Vista Blue was finally forcing myself to set up some kind of home studio. I did some basic research in 2014 and figured this was something I could probably do. It was a big step for me to record my songs without help from the friends who had been assisting me for the past 15 years or so. This was the first thing I attempted to record with my new set up in 2014. Paul Sanchez wrote this, and he is one of my favorite songwriters.

7. Hey Coach, Put Johnny In (demo)

After we released Good Eye, Todd suggested we should write some songs for our second EP that highlighted the baseball years that come between little league and the major leagues. I did this demo in spring 2015, but then Todd wrote "Pennant Race," and I wrote "Johnny's Gonna Strike Out." So this song got pushed back to the 3rd EP, and Johnny's name got changed to Robbie. It's a totally different song without Mark's bass, but it's a good idea of the kind of stuff I send to the band before we record.

8. Girl Who Can Curl (Mark and Beth's demo)

When we decided to do the curling-themed split 7-inch with the Zambonis, we quickly realized that we didn't actually know a whole lot about curling. So I took the Beach Boys approach and wrote about all the places we could go curling, while Mark and his wife Beth sat down and wrote this one about actual curling stuff. This was their original demo. I later changed the chords a little and added the middle eight. We're lucky to be surrounded by so many talented people who pitch in behind the scenes. Beth is a great singer and songwriter here in Nashville, and you can find her work here: www.youtube.com/user/bethj007

9. Yes, Mother

Our friends Emily and Sue did the awesome "Yes, Mother" podcast, where they discussed the Bates Motel TV show. I'd said for a couple of years that I wanted to write them a song, so I got this together for the last episode (or the one where they discussed the final episode of the TV series). Recorded in April 2017.

10. When It Was Summer (end vocals)

A friend asked for this mix after Summer's Over was released, so I threw this together for him and found it when I was looking for tracks for this collection.

11. Tommy Broke Broke the Water Cooler (demo)

This was recorded in early 2015. It's probably the 2nd or 3rd demo I'd done for this song, and I think it is the version I sent to Todd to record drums over.

12. Happy Birthday (Groovie Ghoulies cover)

I recorded this for my friend Matthew while doing some Vista Blue demos in 2014 or 2015. It's the only time I've ever recorded myself "attempting" to play my ukulele.
